📝 This week’s musing…
Every time I travel without my kids now, I feel lost, like a ghost of myself. Last weekend, I took a trip alone to meet a girlfriend in Chicago, and I floated through the airport, unsure of what to do with myself.
My arms felt strangely light, unburdened by toys, backpacks, or strollers. I breezed through security without the usual routine of taking off little shoes or carrying a toddler through the metal detector. It was a rare moment of complete freedom, where I could decide where to go, what to eat, and how long I could linger at the gate, without any constraints.
But underneath that freedom, there was a strange mix of emotions, a bittersweet feeling. Some might find this odd, but I think it reflects my deep love for my family—the three people who have become my home.
I am so thankful for girlfriends, an incredibly supportive husband, and the opportunity to enjoy a weekend away. I loved catching up with my friend, sleeping in, and savoring long dinners without worrying about rushing back to relieve the babysitter.
But even in those moments, my thoughts were filled with home. As I rode along the Chicago River on an architecture boat tour, I couldn't help but think how much Will would've loved it. I could almost hear his excited chatter and see his eyes light up at the sight of the beautiful buildings.
I thought about how I can't wait to return to Chicago with my family. I want to cheer at a Cubs game, run through Millennium Park, and share deep-dish pizza together.
Motherhood changes you. I love my alone time—the luxury of reading a good book with hot coffee in hand, and the freedom to wander without worrying about diapers or nap schedules. But I love my little family and this life we’re creating.
It reminds me of the newborn phase, when you’re so exhausted and can’t wait for bedtime, but the second the baby goes to sleep you find yourself staring at the monitor or scrolling back through pictures from the day.
Am I alone in this? Or have you felt similarly since becoming a mom? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
Chicago in September is absolutely beautiful.
✨ Friday favorites…
👁️ I’m always on the hunt for a good mascara. I recently started using this Sky High one, and I’ve liked it. The brush adds great length without making your eyelashes too thick.
📰 I love the Wall Street Journal’s “What’s News” newsletter. It’s a daily newsletter featuring the top 3 stories of the day and a brief overview of each. It’s a great way to stay informed, without being overwhelmed.
🥜 This recipe for Peanut Butter Overnight oats is delicious, and super easy to make ahead. Having a ready-made breakfast helps ensure I eat breakfast, and makes those chaotic mornings less stressful.
