Presence Over Perfection: A Holiday Reminder for Busy Moms

Yesterday, we celebrated Halloween at the boys’ school. There was a parade and a sing-along, and we prepared a multitude of games, snacks, and goodie bags. But you know what? The thing the kids enjoyed best was dancing under a simple strand of orange string lights.

They danced and giggled, and when those string lights came on, the whole thing felt immediately more festive. It was a moment that reminded me of the joy in simplicity, and I'll carry that lesson with me into the holiday season.

Over the next few months, our calendars will be filled with school performances, family gatherings, birthday parties, and holiday events.

As moms, we’ll be stressed trying to keep our calendars updated, manage all the necessary RSVPs, buy the perfect gifts, plan the perfect menus, and ensure we’re giving everyone enough of our time while keeping the wheels from falling off at home.

After all the planning and fanfare of a busy Halloween day, the most cherished moment tonight was sitting on the front porch watching my kids hand out candy to trick-or-treaters. I loved sitting and taking in the evening, and they loved being a part of the giving.

As we head into the holiday season, it's a reminder about what our kids will remember. They won’t remember most of the presents they receive or how our holiday menu was over the top. Sometimes, the simple things are what they’ll remember best - nights drinking hot chocolate with extra marshmallows, walks around the neighborhood looking at the twinkling lights, or taking the wish list off of the Angel Tree at Church and giving gifts that will bring a little more joy to someone else.

Give yourself the grace of not trying to do it all this holiday season. All they really want is your presence!
